There is a funny thing about the stories we tell ourselves. We love them. We need them. Sometimes, without realizing it, we get trapped inside them.

Stories shape our identity as athletes, coaches, and parents. They drive motivation, create culture, and influence how we approach challenges. But sometimes the story we tell no longer fits. And knowing when to rewrite your story can be one of the most important skills in coaching and life.

Why Rewriting Your Story Matters in Coaching and Life

For coaches, athletes, and parents, stories give us comfort. They give us a script to follow and a way to understand ourselves and others. Entire team cultures are built on them.

But what happens when the story that served you so well stops working? That is when it is time to pause and ask if rewriting your story might open the door to new growth.

Letting Go of Old Coaching Narratives

I remember a season where I clung to the story of being the hardest working coach in the room. The first in. The last out. The grinder. But life changed. My energy shifted. And yet I still chased that old identity until burnout hit. I talked about this in my Mental Cast episode I Wasn’t Prepared and it was a real moment of reflection.

Athletes do this too. They cling to being the underdog or the hardest worker long after they have outgrown that role. Parents can unintentionally do the same with the narratives they hold about their kids.

Rewriting Your Story Builds Mental Flexibility

Rewriting your story takes courage. It is easier to stick with what is familiar. But true mental flexibility in sports and life means recognizing when a new chapter is needed.

I see this with coaches stepping into new programs. They either continue old scripts or choose to create new, empowering stories for their teams. That is where growth happens.

If this resonates, you might also enjoy my past blog on I Am Not Gary Vee where I explored the dangers of chasing someone else’s narrative instead of writing your own.

The Power of Stories That Evolve

The stories we tell must evolve with us. If your story feels heavy or limiting, that is a sign it is time to rewrite.

Not erase. Not regret. Just turn the page. Start a new chapter that reflects where you and your athletes are today.

You get to be the author. And that is where real growth begins.

Until next time, here is to stories that grow with us. See you on the next page.

" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.danmickle.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Blog-Post-win.png?fit=810%2C810&ssl=1" />
We’ve all been there. The team you’re cheering for seems to be stuck in a never-ending losing streak, and your athlete is feeling it. It’s tough when you see your child working hard, but the results don’t reflect their effort. Worse yet, the coach or teammates may not even recognize their true potential. How do you keep their spirits high when it feels like the world is conspiring against them? How dop we turn the losses in to wins?

Let me tell you, it’s not about the losses on the scoreboard. Sure, those are frustrating, but there’s a much bigger game being played—one that’s all about resilience, mindset, and mental flexibility. No, I’m not talking about the type of mental toughness everyone loves to throw around like it’s some magical quality. I prefer the term mental flexibility; the ability to adapt, recover, and maintain focus even when things aren’t going your way. When you’re facing a rough patch, being able to bend without breaking is everything. Turning losses into wins doesn’t just happen on the court; it starts with the mindset off the court.

So, how do we help our kids stay locked in mentally when the losses keep stacking up? Let’s break it down.

1. Focus on What You Control

When your athlete feels stuck in a cycle of defeat, it’s easy to get frustrated. But remind them that they control their attitude, effort, and focus. Encourage them to set small, personal goals within each game—things like improving a specific skill, communicating better on the court, or just bringing positive energy to the team. By focusing on the process, they can regain a sense of control and feel like they’re progressing, even if the scoreboard isn’t showing it. This is how you begin turning losses into wins: focusing on the small victories that build up over time.

2. Develop a Growth Mindset

One of the most powerful tools to help any athlete navigate struggles is developing a growth mindset. This means teaching them to view setbacks as opportunities to improve. They may not win every match, but each one is a chance to learn something new. Fostering this mindset shifts the focus from winning at all costs to growing and developing in all aspects of the game.

3. Celebrate the Small Wins

If your athlete is feeling down about their performance, it’s time to shift the focus. Celebrate the small wins! Whether it’s a perfect pass, a strong serve, or just staying calm under pressure, these moments add up. Remind them that each step forward counts, and that their contribution to the team, no matter how small it seems, is invaluable. This kind of mindset shift is crucial in turning losses into wins both on and off the field.

4. Be the Rock They Need

As a parent, your role in their mental game is critical. Your support can mean the difference between an athlete who loses confidence and one who learns to thrive under pressure. Keep the conversation positive and forward-thinking. Encourage them to be patient with their development, but also acknowledge the hard work they’re putting in. Remember, they need to hear that you believe in them—on and off the field. Being their rock is key to turning losses into wins, because it reinforces their ability to bounce back stronger.

5. Learn From Every Loss

It’s tempting to brush off a bad game or loss as just another “bad day,” but each one holds valuable lessons. After the dust settles, help your athlete reflect on what went wrong, and more importantly, what went right. This is part of building that mental flexibility, teaching them how to bounce back stronger each time. Have they learned how to shake off a tough mistake? Have they worked on staying positive when things aren’t going their way? These lessons are at the heart of turning losses into wins, and they’ll serve your athlete far beyond the game.

The Bigger Picture: Mental Performance Training

It’s easy to get caught up in the cycle of win and lose, but as we’ve discussed, success is much more than just those numbers on the scoreboard. That’s why mental performance training is so vital. If your athlete is feeling drained, stuck, or disheartened, it might be time for some extra guidance in this area.

That’s why I created my Mental Performance Boot Camp. It’s a 4-day live event designed for athletes aged 12-18, giving them the mental tools they need to focus on performance, growth, and resilience. The strategies we cover help athletes navigate tough seasons and challenges, so they can stay locked in mentally, no matter what’s happening on the field. Mental Performance Boot Camp Registration

A Personal Story: My Own Struggles and Triumphs

I remember a time when I felt like my team just couldn’t catch a break. The losses kept piling up, and it was easy to get bogged down by frustration. But rather than dwelling on what we couldn’t control, we shifted our focus to what we could do better. We broke things down, celebrated the small wins, and stayed mentally strong through it all. It wasn’t a perfect solution, but over time, it turned those losses into invaluable lessons.

The Final Word: Your Athlete’s Potential is Unlimited

The reality is, setbacks are part of the game. They don’t define your athlete—they just give them an opportunity to prove their mental resilience. The key is to help them stay mentally locked in, focused on growth, and confident in their abilities. Encourage them to keep pushing, celebrate every little victory, and remember that each day is a chance to improve.

" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.danmickle.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Blog-Post-Funk2.png?fit=810%2C810&ssl=1" />
We’ve all been there. You hit that point in the season where the energy starts to dip, the excitement from the first few weeks feels like it was ages ago, and it seems like everyone, athletes, coaches, even parents, is running on empty. The mid-season funk can creep up on you, and let’s face it, they’re tough to shake off. But here’s the thing: that mid-season funk? It doesn’t have to be a bad thing. In fact, it could be one of the best opportunities you’ll have all season to reset and refocus. Turning the mid-season funk into opportunity can be challenging.

Time to Reevaluate Team Goals

Alright, let’s talk about this. By the middle of the season, things might not be going exactly how you imagined. Maybe you set some ambitious goals at the beginning of the year, but now they seem like a distant dream. Or maybe your athletes have hit a plateau. This is a great time to stop and think: Are those goals still relevant? Have they evolved? Mid-season is a perfect time to reset and recalibrate. Instead of letting that frustration fester, sit down with your athletes, talk about progress, and maybe even set some new short-term goals that’ll get them excited to push forward.

Spice Up the Practice Plan

We’ve all been there—staring at the same old practice routine and thinking, this again? It’s easy for athletes to get bored if you’re running through the same drills week after week. This is when you get to have some fun as a coach! Change things up. Get creative. Maybe it’s a fun competition, a new drill, or a completely new focus for the day. Throwing a little variety into your practices is a great way to reenergize the team and keep everyone on their toes.

Build Resilience and Shift the Mindset

Here’s the deal: adversity is part of the game. And that mid-season funk? It’s a prime opportunity to teach your athletes how to handle setbacks and challenges. Instead of letting them focus on the frustration of losing a few games or not improving as quickly as they’d hoped, shift the focus. Help them see that it’s all about the journey, not just the destination. If they can learn to embrace the grind and keep pushing forward, that’s when the magic happens.

Open Up Communication

This is the time when your athletes might start feeling the weight of the season. Some might be tired, others might be frustrated, and a few might even be ready to check out. As a coach, this is where you can really make a difference. Take the time to check in with your team—individually and as a group. Have an honest conversation about how everyone’s feeling. Let them know it’s okay to be frustrated, but remind them that you’re all in this together. Sometimes, just knowing their coach cares and is open to hearing what’s on their minds can be a game-changer.

Focus on Individual Growth

Not every athlete is feeling the mid-season funk the same way, right? Some are likely pushing through and loving it, while others might need a little more support. Check in with your athletes individually and see where they’re at. Maybe someone’s struggling with confidence, while another needs more time working on their technique. By addressing their individual needs, you’re not only helping them out of the funk, but you’re also setting them up for growth in ways they didn’t even realize.

Embrace the Downtime

If you’ve got any time to hit the reset button, whether it’s a light practice day or a week off, take it. I can suggest some great books here. Your athletes need to recharge physically and mentally just as much as they need to keep working hard. Don’t underestimate the power of rest. Sometimes a little break is all it takes to get them back in the game with a fresh mindset.

The Bottom Line: It’s All About Building Resilience

At the end of the day, the mid-season funk isn’t something to fear—it’s an opportunity. It’s a chance for your athletes to prove they can push through tough times, learn from their mistakes, and bounce back stronger. As a coach, this is your moment to help them grow not just as athletes, but as people. And if you’re able to embrace that mindset, you’ll come out the other side of the season with a team that’s more resilient, more connected, and more ready for whatever comes next.

So, the next time the mid-season funk hits, don’t panic. Use it. Turning the mid-Season funk into opportunity can turn it into your coaching opportunity of the year.

It’s inevitable, right? Whether it’s a sudden shift in team dynamics, an unexpected injury, or a season’s worth of unpredictability, change is the one thing you can always count on. In sports, as in life, the ability to lead through change can determine whether you’re left feeling overwhelmed and powerless—or whether you emerge stronger, more resilient, and better equipped for the challenges ahead.

But let’s be real: when change comes at you fast, it’s easy to panic. The unknown stirs up anxiety, and the fear of what could go wrong often dominates our thinking. It’s like driving in fog—no matter how fast you’re going, you just can’t see what’s ahead. The key to navigating those moments isn’t in avoiding the fog but in learning how to drive through it with confidence. And as a leader, your role is crucial. You have the power to steer your team from panic to power. How? By embracing a few key leadership traits that will turn uncertainty into an opportunity for growth.

Key Leadership Traits for Leading Through Change

1. Adaptability: The Key to Navigating the Unknown

Adaptability isn’t just about rolling with the punches—it’s about being able to pivot, adjust, and keep your cool when things don’t go as planned. Whether it’s an unexpected shift in team roles, a change in coaching staff, or the need to adjust strategy mid-season, adaptable leaders don’t flinch. Instead, they roll up their sleeves, reassess the situation, and steer the ship forward.

Take, for example, the story of a college basketball coach who lost his star player mid-season. The initial panic was palpable—after all, the team had been built around this athlete’s unique skills. But rather than crumble under the weight of the change, the coach gathered his team and reframed the situation: “Now we get to see who we really are as a team,” he said. “This is our chance to step up and show what we’re made of.” By focusing on adaptability, he helped his players embrace the change, developing new strengths and strategies along the way. That team ended up not just surviving the season—they thrived.

2. Clear Communication: The Anchor in a Storm

When change is happening, communication becomes your most powerful tool. It’s easy to assume that everyone understands what’s going on in your head, but when you’re dealing with uncertainty, it’s essential to over-communicate. Leaders who communicate clearly and consistently during times of change give their teams a sense of security. They let everyone know what’s going on, why it matters, and how they can contribute to the solution.

Take a moment to think about your own experience as a coach: Have you ever faced a situation where your athletes or staff were confused about the direction you were going in, simply because you didn’t provide enough clarity? It happens, especially when we’re feeling overwhelmed by all the changes happening around us. But in these moments, clarity is the antidote to anxiety.

As a leader, you need to openly discuss the challenges you’re facing and outline the plan for moving forward. Don’t assume everyone is on the same page. In fact, you may need to repeat key points or adjust your messaging depending on who you’re talking to—athletes, parents, assistant coaches—each group may need a slightly different approach. But above all, be transparent. When you communicate clearly, your team will feel supported and know exactly where they stand.

3. Maintaining Calm Under Pressure: Your Superpower

In times of change, it’s easy to get swept up in the chaos. The key to being an effective leader isn’t about being the loudest in the room—it’s about being the calmest. When things go sideways, your athletes are looking to you for guidance. If you remain composed, you’re signaling to them that they don’t need to panic either.

There’s a saying I like to remind myself of when the going gets tough: Calm is contagious. I remember one particular game where we were down by 10 points in the final quarter. The tension in the air was palpable, and I could see the anxiety creeping into my players’ eyes. I gathered them together for a quick huddle and, with a calm smile, said, “This game is far from over. We just need to execute our game plan and trust each other.” I could feel the collective breath of the team calm down, and from that moment on, they played with a renewed sense of focus and composure. We didn’t win that game, but we didn’t lose our cool either.

Staying calm in the face of change is a powerful leadership tool. It not only sets the tone for your team but also builds trust. Your athletes will look to you in moments of uncertainty, and if you can stay calm, they’ll feel more equipped to stay calm themselves.

4. Fostering a Growth Mindset: Turning Setbacks into Opportunities

Change is uncomfortable, no doubt. But discomfort often brings the most significant opportunities for growth. This is where a growth mindset becomes essential. Rather than seeing challenges as roadblocks, those with a growth mindset view them as stepping stones to improvement.

As a coach, you have a unique opportunity to model this mindset for your athletes. When a key player gets injured, don’t just focus on the setback—focus on the opportunity for others to step up. When a game doesn’t go as planned, don’t dwell on the loss. Instead, ask, “What can we learn from this?” Encourage your athletes to embrace challenges as chances to grow and improve, not as failures to avoid.

One of the best ways to encourage this mindset is by offering praise for effort and improvement, not just results. After all, growth comes from trying, failing, and trying again. If your athletes learn to view change as a growth opportunity, they will thrive under any circumstances.

How Coaches Can Help Their Teams Navigate Change

Focus on the Process, Not the Outcome: It’s tempting to obsess over the results when things are uncertain, but the truth is, you have much more control over the process than the outcome. Focus on the actions that lead to success, and encourage your team to do the same.

Create a Safe Space for Emotional Expression: When change is in the air, emotions can run high. Provide a space where your athletes can express their feelings without judgment. Let them know that it’s okay to feel uncertain, but that doesn’t mean they’re weak—it means they’re human.

Provide Structure in Chaos: When everything feels up in the air, provide a sense of structure. A clear routine, a simple focus, or a small win can bring a sense of stability to your team, helping them regain their footing and refocus.

Leading through change is no easy task, but it’s one of the most impactful things you can do for your team. As a leader, your job is not just to manage change but to help your athletes embrace it. By fostering adaptability, clear communication, calmness under pressure, and a growth mindset, you will turn moments of panic into powerful opportunities for growth.

So, the next time change knocks on your door, don’t shy away from it. Instead, step up, lead with confidence, and turn the unknown into your team’s greatest opportunity for growth. After all, the only constant in life—and in sports—is change. It’s how we respond to it that defines us.
