When Focus Isn’t the Problem: Coaching Neurodivergent Athletes Under Pressure

Many athletes who struggle with consistency, focus, or emotional control are often labeled as distracted, unfocused, or mentally inconsistent. For neurodivergent athletes, including those with ADHD, anxiety, or sensory processing differences, the issue is rarely effort or understanding. It is how they experience the moment.

When pressure rises, the moment can speed up, overload, or become difficult to organize, leading to hesitation, rushed decisions, or emotional spikes. Traditional coaching cues like “focus,” “calm down,” or “just play your game” often fall short because they do not give the athlete something actionable to rely on in real time.

This session introduces a practical, research-informed approach grounded in cognitive performance and attention regulation. Coaches will learn how to recognize early signs of overload, implement simple and visible reset strategies, and help athletes reconnect to clear, controllable actions during play. While designed with neurodivergent athletes in mind, these strategies improve clarity and execution for all athletes.

The goal is not to change the athlete, but to give them a system that works with how they process the game, especially when the moment becomes chaotic.

Objectives

  • Participants will understand how neurodivergent athletes experience pressure, attention shifts, and in-game decision making.
  • Participants will learn practical reset and refocus strategies that help athletes regain control in real time.
  • Participants will be able to apply these strategies within their current practice and competition structure to improve consistency and performance.
