Occupations of Illrepute (#030)

#030 – Occupations of Illrepute

Have naught to do with Occupations of Illrepute, still less with fads that bring more notoriety than repute. There are many fanciful sects, and from all the prudent man has to flee. There are bizarre tastes that always take to their heart all that wise men repudiate; they live in love with singularity. This may make them well known indeed, but more as objects of ridicule than of repute. A cautious man does not even make a profession of his wisdom, still less of those matters that make their followers ridiculous. These need not be specified, for common contempt has sufficiently singled them out.

We see it time and time again in the coaching world.  Some new and unique training methods that everyone jumps on board with.  There is no research done to see if there is actually a long-lasting advantage, or even worse, long-term harm being done.  There tend to be many fancy ads, commercials, themes, and buzzwords around the new training methods.  When the dust settles, it is just a fad that may have worked a little bit, but the “advantage” soon wears off.  This is not to say we shouldn’t look to advance our training and our education, but we have to be cautious of the next “Ab Roller” or “Shake Weight” fad in the coaching and training world.

This blog series is based on the book “The Art of Worldly Wisdom” by Balthasar Gracián.  This book was written for advice on how to achieve personal and professional success.  This blog series aims to visit the points of wisdom and put them in the spotlight of the coaching and education lens.
