[One Day One] Leave Some Margin

There is a reason books leave white space around the words. Without margins, even a beautiful page would feel crowded. The ideas would press against every edge, leaving nowhere for your eyes to rest.

We rarely give our days the same courtesy. We fill the calendar from morning to night, then squeeze the unexpected into whatever tiny gaps remain. A slow checkout line feels like a crisis. A phone call that runs long becomes an inconvenience. Ten quiet minutes somehow look wasteful, so we hand them to another task.

Then life does what life always does. Something takes longer. Someone needs us. Our energy changes. The carefully packed day has no place for any of it, and we blame ourselves for falling behind.

Margin is not laziness. It is where adjustment lives. It gives a hard conversation room to breathe and a tired mind time to catch up. It lets us notice the weather, answer a question thoughtfully, or finish one thing before racing into the next.

You do not need to clear the entire calendar. Start by protecting one small space. Leave ten minutes between commitments. Take the long way from one room to another. Sit in the car for a moment before walking inside. Let a blank space remain blank.

A day does not become more valuable because every inch of it is covered.

Today’s Prompt

Where could you leave a little margin today, and what might that space allow you to notice?
