[One Day One] Not Every Alarm Is Yours

Urgency is contagious. A message arrives with three exclamation points, and suddenly your shoulders are near your ears. Someone says, “I need this right away,” and your carefully planned day begins moving furniture to make room for their panic.

Sometimes the situation truly is urgent. Often, though, urgency is simply a feeling being handed from one person to another. You are allowed to examine the package before signing for it. What is actually due? What happens if it waits an hour? Is there a real consequence, or is someone uncomfortable with not having an immediate answer?

Calm does not mean you do not care. It means you want your response to match the situation rather than the volume. Before rearranging your entire day, pause long enough to determine whether the fire is real, whether you are the person responsible for it, and whether it needs to be handled this minute.
