[One Day One] The Costume That Stayed On

Costumes are easy to notice near Halloween. The less obvious ones are the roles we wear all year: the funny one, the capable one, the peacemaker, the person who never needs help.

These roles may have started for good reasons. They helped us belong, stay safe, or contribute. Trouble begins when the costume becomes a requirement. The capable person cannot admit confusion. The funny person cannot have a difficult day. The peacemaker cannot express anger without feeling like they have failed.

You do not have to discard every role. Just notice where it has become too tight. You are allowed to be competent and need support, kind and disappointed, strong and tired. A role can describe something you often bring without becoming the only version of you that others are allowed to meet.

Today’s Prompt

Which familiar role could you loosen enough to show one more honest part of yourself?
