[One Day One] The Useful Kind of Bored

We have become very skilled at preventing boredom. A line at the store, a quiet elevator, or thirty seconds before a meeting begins can be filled instantly. There is always something to scroll, check, refresh, or watch.

That constant rescue leaves little room for the mind to wander. Boredom can be uncomfortable, but it also creates space for connections we do not make while consuming the next thing. An idea surfaces. A memory returns. We notice the person beside us or the room we are actually standing in.

You do not need a silent retreat. Try leaving one small gap unfilled. Wait without reaching for the phone. Sit in the car for a minute after arriving. Let your attention move without assigning it a task. The moment may feel empty at first. Empty space, however, is often where something original finally has room to appear.

Today’s Prompt

Which brief empty moment can you leave unfilled today?
